Beat the summer heat at these natural spring baths in Rome, Italy.

I have found THE thing to do to beat the incessant cloying heat of the summer in Rome. When it has come to the point that you avoid going outside and you can’t face another long trip to the beach in a stuffed metro train with no available seats, then I urge you to seek out the refreshing Terme di Cretone.

After a recent excursion to the natural spring waters of these baths surrounded by a green lush forest I am a total convert. I actually left feeling cool and energized, something I haven’t felt in many weeks!

I would have been against an organised complex with a fairly big entrance fee like this in the past. That is until I was about to turn the garden hose on myself in the sweltering heat and I felt the instantly invigorating waters of the Terme. The water stays at a constant delicious cool temperature, like the feeling of when you’re unbearably hot and you open the fridge. I promise you, at least for a treat every cent you pay is worth it for getting your sanity back.

The Terme are an alternative to the beach outside Rome’s packed city in the Sabina area north-east of Rome. The trip is 30 minutes in an air-conditioned train from Tiburtina, then a 5-minute air-conditioned shuttle service (SAP bus) to the parking lot of the baths.

This is a place to be enjoyed all day long. I couldn’t get enough of the three large swimming pools; one for children and the other two so deep that they have diving boards for adults, all fed directly from natural sulphuric spring water. (There’s a little whiff of sulphur when you arrive but barely noticeable once inside in my book). Myriad fountains give a glorious deep massage effect to the shoulders and they even have a bouncy mock beach area where you can lie in the water people watching. I stayed in and explored the pools until I was positively chilly, such a relief! If you’ve had your fill of the fresh waters then there are four tennis courts, a bar and restaurant with pretty low prices, two football fields, a spa and fitness centre, endless shady areas for taking naps, little market kiosks, water aerobics and even saunas.

If you, like me, are dying to relax and escape the heat in Rome, I promise you will be utterly changed by the Terme di Cretone!

How to Get There:

30 minute train (FM1 Fiumicino-Orte, in the direction of Fara Sabina) from Roma Tiburtina or Roma Ostiense to Piana Bella-Montelibretti.

* Tickets at Tiburtina can be bought in automatic ticket machines on the main outdoor piazza at the station.

BUS SHUTTLE: Once you step off the train at Piana Bella turn left and go up the exit stairs that bring you to a parking lot on the right of the platform. There will be a few white buses in the parking lot by the stairs (the SAP line of buses are scheduled to meet the train but it’s Italy so don’t expect it to always arrive perfectly on time). Ask a driver for the Terme di Cretone (or look for the bus that has Palombara Sabina written on the front).

**Although this bus always passes by the Terme, only at certain times do they actually turn in to the parking lot of the baths, so be sure to check the timetable in this photo.

After 5 minutes winding along a pretty country road the bus will take a right and pull in to a large parking lot. Ask the driver if you’re not sure before getting off the bus. Get the return bus at the same spot you got off and again check the schedule (posted on the wall in the cafe/bar if you need it). For online SAP timetable to and from the Terme search Terme di Cretone on this site:
